The Moving Industry’s Bad Rep

Let’s face it. The moving industry has a horrible reputation. Items routinely get broken or stolen, inexperienced movers show up at your home, the company is uncommunicative, your total was way above your estimate, or worse, your items are held hostage until you pay more.

For a great example of an all-time terrible move, check out this article in Newsweek last year. http://www.newsweek.com/moving-movers-fraud-scams-congress-encore-moving-california-americas-best-529840

What’s going on here? How did the moving industry become the lawless west? Leaving high-end New York moving companies competing against disreputable phonies? First, we have to discuss the deregulation of the moving industry.

In 1980, the Motor Carrier Act repealed the regulations on interstate motor carriers in order to promote competition, create a level playing field, and to make it easier to compare moving prices. But what ended up happening is that companies with limited barriers of entry, no performance standards, and self-policing, started popping up left and right. Companies striving to deliver exceptional service (like Morris Moving) are forced to compete against illegitimate pop-up moving companies whose goal is to rake in as much cash as possible before being eventually shut down.fraud movers

To make matters worse, these disingenuous “moving companies” are keeping prices in the New York moving industry exceptionally low. This may sound like a win for the consumer, but with prices so low, costs have to be cut so companies stay in business. In short, with prices so low, service levels drop. Especially when moving in New York, a great moving company is worth the money. They shouldn’t be competing on the same playing field with a pop-up “moving company”.

How can you tell if a moving company in New York is a fraud? Look for red flags such as high down payments, unclear costs, and low estimates. “What? Low estimates sounds like a good thing!” you might be saying to yourself. If you get an estimate that seems too low to be true, it is. There are hidden costs, we guarantee it. When you deal with us, we clearly lay out and explain all of your costs upfront so you know exactly what you’re paying for and how much you’re paying for it.

Morris Moving is a 4th generation family owned moving company moving New Yorkers since 1898. We have movers who have worked for Morris Moving exclusively for 30 years, 20 years, 16 years, 10 years, etc. In short, we have career movers, not high school kids on summer vacation.

No matter what any other mover tells you, a moving company is only as good as the moving crew sent to your home. Moving with us, is moving with peace of mind knowing you’re getting experts taking care of you. There are a plethora of NYC moving companies, but few great NYC moving companies. Morris Moving is one of the great ones. Check out our testimonials page, Yelp, or Angie’s List to read what our customers have written about us.
