New York Times’ Moving Article

Recently The New York Times published an article called Pack the Box. Leave the Stress in the Real Estate section about the complications of moving, and offered some tips. While I can’t tell you why they wouldn’t come to New York’s boutique mover for moving pro-tips, we’re happy to offer them to you anyway, especially if you’re moving in New York.

As is well known, the moving process is stressful and difficult. Leaving a home filled with laughs, tears, and memories of times long gone is one of the hardest changes people make in their lives. To help illuminate the importance of background checks and thorough research are, the article cites a family’s worst-case moving scenario. Having to go through three terrible moving companies, who overcharged, showed up late, broke some items, and held the family’s items hostage unless they paid an extra fee. Movers in New York are a dime a dozen; so do your homework! Know your New York mover is reputable by searching them in the Better Business Bureau, on Yelp, and on Angie’s List. Read customer reviews, not just for star ratings, but also for content of each review. It’s important to understanding a moving company’s strengths from the words of people who took the time to post a review.

Packing and organizing are huge time, energy, and resource burdens. Imagine every item in your home must be either packed and organized carefully, or given away. If we may be so bold as to make a suggestion… hire an organizer! People don’t realize the benefit of an organizer until one is in their home making their life immeasurably easier. They organize their packing, help separate and de-clutter, and work hand in hand with your mover to ensure a seamless move start to finish. Another tip, if your organizer doesn’t pack, find out if your mover does. If they do, have them do it! Morris Moving’s movers are expert packers! We carefully wrap everything in a non-ink paper (so no smudges) and label every box clearly so we know what’s inside and where in the new house it goes. You also want to know who is going to be handling your move, showing up at your house for the estimate, and how experienced your movers are. With us, you know that Jacob will be the one personally planning your move, and your movers will have around 40-60 combined years of New York City and Westchester moving experience.

The “Counting Down to Moving Day” section is littered with some hidden moving gems. Such as being sure to schedule, ahead of time, the change of your home addresses for your crucial services: bills, drivers license, insurance cards, etc well in advance. Anything you’re not planning on having the movers move, label big and clear on all sides with a “DO NOT MOVE”. Arrange for a baby/ dog sitter for moving day to occupy your little ones while you’re involved with the move. Call your mover a few days/ a week in advance to confirm the day and time of the move. Be sure to confirm the parking situation for the moving truck in front of the building you’re moving to. Especially when moving in New York City, this can be a tricky situation. Similarly, also be sure to reserve the elevator for moving day if there is one. And while our men are the most trustworthy and respectful in the moving industry, it may make you feel more comfortable to bring your especially valuable belongings, such as jewelry, special photos, check books, children, etc, with you in the car.
